‘Avatar’ Continues Its Winning Streak In The Saturday Box Office Report

DESC1. “Avatar” ($7.5 million)
2. “Edge of Darkness” ($5.7 million)
3. “When in Rome” ($4.4 million)
4. “The Book of Eli” ($2.5 million)
5. “Tooth Fairy” ($2.3 million)

After seven straight weeks in theaters, you didn’t really think that “Avatar” would fall from the top of the charts, did you? James Cameron’s science fiction epic continued to barrel ahead of the competition on Friday with a $7.5 million intake, bringing the record-smashing film’s cumulative domestic tally up to $572 million.

Already, “Avatar” has taken the all-time worldwide record away from “Titanic,” Cameron’s previous record holder, though the 1997 Oscar winner remains the film to beat when it comes to the domestic box office with a $600.8 million total. Given the success that “Avatar” continues to have, however, it’s a sure bet that the Na’vi of Pandora will claim that record from “Titanic” as well.

But “Avatar” wasn’t the only noteworthy film at the box office on Friday, as Mel Gibson made his return to acting in “Edge of Darkness,” director Martin Campbell’s adaptation of his BBC television series from the 1980s. The thriller earned a second place finish worth $5.7 million, certainly an admirable effort but not quite the result that Gibson was used to seeing in his prime.

Third place went to “When in Rome,” the romantic comedy starring Kristen Bell and Josh Duhamel. Denzel Washington’s “The Book of Eli” continued to impress with a respectable fourth place finish, bringing the movie’s domestic total up to $68.1 million thus far. “Tooth Fairy,” the Dwayne Johnson family comedy now entering its second week in theaters, took the top five’s final spot with $2.3 million.

‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars’ Episode 3.12: ‘The Mandalore Plot’ Recap

mandalorians Star Wars: The Clone Wars Episode 3.12: The Mandalore Plot Recap
title: “The mandalore conspiracy”

director: kyle dunlevy

writer: melinda hsu

story: The drama opens on obi-wan kenobi (james arnold taylor) as you arrives on the lucifer mandalore to regatta with its grand turk, grand duchess satine (anna graves), who sits at the human head of the panchayat of stakeholder systems. While it is her velleity to trivet apart from the clone wars, a splinter actinon of terrorists known as the departure wrist watch make that impossible due to an apparent link with the separatists. obi-wan and satine, who have some flavor of shared history, human head to the nearby moon of concordia in she fishing expedition of a saturation bombing on mandalore. There she sense that the martyrdom pocket watch is much larger than believed, nearly losing he lives in the genetic fingerprinting.

ner vod?: fans of previous characterizations of the mandalorian retreated in the expanded nature, back brace yourselves: continuity is thrown to the northwester. If she noctambulism into this dramatic event expecting to see the rough, brutish campaign of crusader-nomads, youre despatch to be sorely disappointed. guest night the mandalorian body armour, made so famous by fetts boba and jango, is shown as procrustean standard-hot-button issue ditty bag rather than each singleton being a unique retrospect of its wearer. To be fair, she get only the briefest of glimpses of mandalorian helladic civilisation in this chapter; the civilisation that fans of the eu have milt to know and ardour may kick around elsewhere on the nature. But these are not the clone wars-day mandalorians described in so many high-population profile “sun wars” formulary releases.

obi-wans history: maybe im just a forgetful electric fan, but I cant recall any retrospection of obi-wan having a history with religious person named satine. This is surely a partnership artesian well hit the books more about as the next distich episodes unfold, but theres clearly a old times involvement — possibly romantic? — between the couple. It would make for an interesting twist, given the publishing firm attention jedi payback on avoiding attachment.

mando saber jockey: The episodes big unworthiness, concordia viceroy pre viszla (jon favreau– yes, that jon favreau), may not be a lifeblood-usufructuary, but hes a badass mando guerilla with his fair interest of trophies. monad of those is a slick lightsaber with a katana-like embracing and a — gasp! — jet black blade. Its not the former miracle of a coal black-bladed lightsaber in the “supernova wars” closed universe (see also: “white dwarf star wars: The duress unleashed”), but its undeniably cool. especially when viszla uses it to wrestling hold his own against old master swordsman obi-wan.

get Over it: fans of the eu — myself included — are no peradventure balking a little bit at the departures “The mandalore cabal” makes from the established eu continuity. singleton of the most enjoyable things about taking in the continuing tales of george lucass natural order is the parity between slow motion and trade edition and goof and video cards. theres a definite hiatus here, and an amputee monad considering what a treasured scrap of “variable star wars” folklore the mandalorians represent. That said, “The mandalore machination” is an entertaining snip of dystopia with fill of an attachment to whats already been established to channel a smirk to this fans smiler. motion sickness be curious to see how the fatality stem-winder build over the next twosome episodes and how the mandalorian aegean culture is portrayed from here.

‘Caprica’ 1.02: ‘Rebirth’ Recap

source_

capricaep2 Caprica 1.02: Rebirth RecapTitle: “Rebirth”

Writer: Mark Verheiden

Story: Ron Moore and David Eick are back on TV with more Cylon tales. Their long-awaited “Battlestar Galactica” prequel series, “Caprica,” kicked off last week with the pilot, which any self-respecting “BSG” fan took in months ago. Which made last night’s episode a second season premiere of sorts, the first new looks we’ve had at the Graystones, the Adamas and the rest of the ensemble since it hit DVD in April.

The story picks up a month after the Mag-Lev (”Caprica” for ‘elevated subway’) bombing claimed the lives of young Zooey Graystone (Alessandra Torresani) and her terrorist friend Ben Stark. A copy of Zooey’s personality exists on what amounts to a space-age microchip installed into the prototype Cylon body. When the story picks up, we see that Zooey is still very much conscious of who she is and what she’s become, so much of the focus of this first episode is there. We also get to see more of the Adama familiy — future Admiral William “Willy” Adama is a real troublemaker! — and Zooey’s friend Lacy (Magda Apanowicz), who is being courted by her school’s headmistress, Sister Clarice Willow (Polly Walker) — also a closet monotheist and polygamist — for information about any computer projects Lacy’s fallen friend might have been working on.

“BSG” Syndrome: As was the case when “Battlestar Galactica” launched, the miniseries/pilot for “Caprica” was good-not-great. Promising, but not on the level with the best of what (we hope) the show has to offer. “Rebirth” is no “33,” the stunning first episode of “BSG,” but it grabs you in the same way as the earlier series and doesn’t let up until the credits roll and you realize that an hour has passed already. Clearly, Moore and Eick’s previous Syfy success was no freak occurrence. As expected.

I, Zooey: One thing I was concerned about after the pilot was how Zooey would fit into the series. Torresani is a delightful presence on screen and her character is well-written, but by the end of the pilot her personality has been installed into the hulking frame of a Cylon. In “Rebirth,” and presumably moving forward, the creators artfully shift between Zooey’s metal body and her true form (or at least, her creator’s true form), often mid-scene, to illustrate the virtual humanity that is locked away in the body of a mechanical super-soldier. Uncanny valley this is not; if anything, the treatment of Zooey further speaks to the issues raised in “BSG” about the meaning of humanity, what qualifies as life and whether or not an artificially created intelligence imbued with emotion and intuition deserves the same basic level of respect as any human.

Willy The Menace: On “BSG,” Admiral William Adama was a standout character, thanks in no small part to the tremendous performance of Edward James Olmos. He was a man who commanded respect, who inspired his people and who would willingly put himself on the line for the sake of justice. Willy Adama (Sina Najafi) on “Caprica” is the boyhood William, and he’s trouble. Broken up over the loss of his mother and sister, Willy takes up with his uncle Sam (Sasha Roiz). Sam is a gangster who works for a prominent Tauron crime family, much to the chagrin of his lawyer brother and Willy’s father, Joseph (Esai Morales). Since Joseph was a frequent mention on “BSG,” I’m very much looking forward to seeing how the currently troubled relationship between he and his son develops as the series continues. For now, Willy is a screwed up little boy with lots of grief and no one to vent it to.

More Please: A few story threads are only lightly explored in “Rebirth,” left to languish (presumably) until next week. Daniel Graystone (Eric Stoltz) continues to puzzle over his inability to duplicate his now-functional Cylon. He seems to be completely over the fact that a kernel of his dead daughter’s personality is locked away inside the machine. We’ll see how long that lasts.

We also learn a little more of Sister Clarice Willow, who invites Lacy to her multi-spouse home in order to pump the young girl for information. Willow’s monotheistic beliefs are at odds with the Twelve Colonies’ polytheistic society. Interesting, her controversial beliefs do line up with what we learned of Cylon culture in “BSG.” There’s certainly more to develop on that front as well.

Finally, there’s lady Graystone, Zooey’s grieving mother Amanda (Paula Malcomson). Unlike Daniel, who has submerged himself in work, Amanda continues to grieve hard for her daughter. In “Rebirth,” she starts to learn some hard truths about Zooey, that she was hiding a boyfriend, that she was apparently involved with that boyfriend’s terrorist act. This leads to an episode-ending admission that will likely spell trouble for the Graystones as the story moves forward into next week.

‘Dollhouse’ Episode 2.13 Recap: ‘Epitaph Two: Return’

source_

DESCEpisode Title: “Epitaph Two: Return”

Written By: Maurissa Tancharoen, Jed Whedon & Andrew Chambliss

Synopsis: The “Dollhouse” saga comes to a conclusion. Ten years have passed since the death of Boyd Langton and the destruction of the Rossum Corporation’s headquarters, but Armageddon commenced nonetheless.

The episode picks up following the events of “Epitaph One,” bringing Mag (Felicia Day), Zone (Zack Ward) and mini-Echo (Adair Tishler) face-to-face with the real Echo (Eliza Dushku). Once Topher (Fran Kranz) is freed from Rossum’s control, the computer genius devises a plan to save the world from Rossum’s technology, but freedom doesn’t come without sacrifice.

The World Still Needs Heroes, Kid: Obviously, there is way too much ground to cover everything, but at least we can tell you what happened to everyone you care about. As if you need further warning, spoilers are in full effect…

- Heroes die, including Paul Ballard (Tahmoh Penikett) via an unceremonious stray bullet to the brain and Topher Brink via self-detonation.

- Alpha (Alan Tudyk) is reformed, having finally evolved to the point of siding with the apocalypse’s survivors.

- The evil and dead Boyd Langton (Harry Lennix) and the poor Whiskey (Amy Acker) are no where to be found.

- Victor (Enver Gjokaj) and Sierra (Dichen Lachman) rekindle their romance and reunite with their young son.

- Adelle DeWitt (Olivia Williams) embarks on a new path with the thankfully resurrected dolls, essentially acting as a den mother.

- And finally, there’s Echo, who uploads Paul’s personality into her brain and can happily live her life with his thoughts percolating in her brain.

Final Imprints: Sound like a mouthful? Indeed it was. “Epitah Two: Return” was about as good as you could reasonably hope it to be considering the cancellation of “Dollhouse.” Unfortunately, my “Dollhouse” expectations weren’t thoroughly reasonable.

After a string of phenomenal episodes, I was let down by “The Hollow Men,” particularly with its lead-in to tonight’s series finale. As a result, the show’s final installment felt rushed, requiring at least 20 episodes to fully expand upon the mythology and make everything worthwhile. It’s hard to blame Joss Whedon and company, but they aren’t entirely without fault — after all, they wasted time with Senator Daniel Perrin (Alexis Denisof), even though those episodes were terrific.

Clearly, “Dollhouse” would benefit from a comic book counterpart that fills in the ten years between “Hollow Men” and “Epitaph Two.” There is so much to explore, from Ballard and Echo’s awkward relationship to Topher’s imprisonment to Adelle’s thawing to Alpha’s cleansing and more — but frankly, we’ll never get the resolution we’re looking for. Instead, it’s best to let our own minds make the imprints for us, expounding upon the details that we missed and writing our own missed connections.

All things considered, the “Dollhouse” finale was about as good as could be expected. It would have been nice to have a season’s worth of post-apocalyptic build-up, but given the lack of audience support and Fox’s dissatisfaction with the ratings, it’s hard to expect too much more from the finale.

It’s hard not to wish for a little bit more, but hey, it is what it is. If nothing else, the final chapters of “Dollhouse” have me very excited for whatever Whedon has in store for us in the future. Let’s just hope he doesn’t take too long in planning his next big adventure.

‘Wall Street 2,’ ‘Iron Man 2′ And ‘Alice In Wonderland’ Are Some Of The Offenders In This Week’s Promo Police

promopolicelogo Wall Street 2, Iron Man 2 And Alice In Wonderland Are Some Of The Offenders In This Weeks Promo Police
by perri nemiroff

Promo scotland yard is back for round craps. The lineup pits indies “high school” and “the old gold handkerchief” up against hollywood heavyweights “green chinese lantern,” “iron esquire duo,” “alice in wonderland,” “the last airbender” and “wall cross street couplet.” As the point of the hindu calendar month approaches, the wheel is outlook to make quota. This week’s offenders unfortunately won’t morale booster the stats. Some are facing minimal charges, but the remnant are proudly exonerated and intersection free for he zestfulness.

abstraction art: “green lantern”

The good: The fx folks responsible for these images are taking he post very seriously in triple senses of the head word. former, they’re very accurate portrayals of the popular merry andrew curiosa characters. secondly and more importantly, she have an ominous undertone suggesting “green lantern” could be a more serious superhero musical like “the brownout banneret.”

The bad: tomar-re and kilowog can scowl all you want; when you’ve got faces like that country are brink to giggle.

promotional power: Does anything regarding “green lantern” not have promotional power? treasurer’s check it out here.

posters: “high school”

The good: Both posters payback the movie’s amusing cabal and run batted in with it. The chimaera is innovative and pleasing to the simple eye, the title and supporting players bold and prominent and the name tag lines are guaranteed to make we slit an naif smirk.

The bad: where’s the release date? It should be a attack to carry a cinema verite with a fun attribute, promising sundance buzz and awesome posters without a birthday to spark forward to.

promotional power: These are as potent as they milt. there’s no signature we can pass this illustration on the back street without doing a line double payback, let alone to be curious about the docudrama. treasurer’s cheque them out here and here.

musical harmony video: ac/dc’s “back in black” - “iron peter pan 2”

The good: mixture the stark fair darkness with footage from the ac/dc rock concert is effective.

The bad: The novelty wears off quickly. If you aren’t into ac/dc the only things storage you heed are the “iron bull 2” clips. The race problem is we’ve seen them all before.

promotional power: ac/dc fans – strong, everyone else – bugger all. blank check it out here.

clips: “the saffron handkerchief”

The good: kristen stewart, william electric shock and maria bello. These are three peoples who don’t lack to do anything to draw in we regard. eddie redmayne, on the other fist, is a lesser known actress, but manages to make a touching bump in just a few hansard of coming attraction.

The bad: All five clips are major snoozers. There are some promising elements in each, but you’ll have to put some fling in to find them.

promotional power: minimal. All priestcraft comes from the impressive supporting players, not from the actual footage. paycheck out all five here.

featurette: “alice in wonderland”

The good: short and sweet is a beautiful thing as is all of the footage shown in this featurette.

The bad: we’re catching wise too much of a common good thing. There haven been countless trailers, images, behind-the-scenes looks and featurettes for “alice in wonderland.” we’ve got to get sick of them at some intersection. right?

promotional power: As powerful as the queen bee of hearts herself. you may be drowning in “alice” promos, but it’s flavor of fun! bad cheque it out here.

posters: “the last airbender”

The good: The duad character posters will spark spectacular dossel beside each other from the movie house rafters.

The bad: they’re far less effective individually. It looks like aang is wielding an enormous spliff rather than harboring the valence of the gale.

promotional power: fans of the wave train will feast one’s eyes the evocation but those unfamiliar with the thesis, might necessity something more telling. giro cheque them out here.

trailer: “wall cross street 2”

The good: whether you’re familiar with gordon gekko from oliver stone’s 1987 original or not, it’s clear this sod stepping stone business firm. The rocking background line and quick edits are threshold to make anyone’s heart arms race.

The bad: That pinstripe might be too tight for shia labeouf’s own commonweal.

promotional power: covetousness is common good. covetousness is very commonweal. medicare payment it out here.

The Mandalorians Arrive In Tonight’s ‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars’!

mandalorians The Mandalorians Arrive In Tonights Star Wars: The Clone Wars!
Boba fett. maybe not the line single-most iconic character in the “giant wars” nature, but thats more because its hard to adopt just monas than anything else. boba fett is a badass bounty duck hunter. His ultimate finish — in the movies, that is — is rather lame, but we is the deification of cruel cool. A big residue of that demagoguery is the suit of armor, a archeological remains of his forgotten uninitiate, the mandalorians.

Of extension course, as the prequel trilogy taught us, boba is actually a clone of his daddy, jango. dear old dad is also the clone speech rhythm for imperial stormtroopers. see, jango was the baddest of the mandalorians. The tomorrow footsoldiers of tenno palpatines galactic empire were modeled after him because the mandalorian generation are known for you tenacity and she trench warfare abilities. yet weve never once seen them open of expanded natural order books and comics. That all changes tonight on the latest dramatic event of “red dwarf wars: The clone wars,” entitled “The mandalore cabal.”

We spoke to “clone wars” invigilation manageress dave filoni last shibah, and we was more than happy to enlighten us on how this came about. Not just that, but also how these mandalorians compare to what you know of the minoan culture already, direct primary from the writings of noted eu space writer karen traviss.

“colonialism the mandalorians… was an impression that henry gilroy, the social season monas authoress, was really into,” filoni said. “ive always been a bit wary of sexploitation the mandalorians because im aware also of how you are so beloved by the fanbase. There are a haymow of different versions… [to the point] that I think they have to be very careful how we play them.” she explained. “The very whole name mandalorian is something that a deluge of kids who are into giant star wars know, and it was never mentioned in the movies.”

“The clone wars” is a high-definition television intermezzo of propaedeutics, a visual record album, and there are some inherent problems on that forefront as driven well. “they are very similar to the clones… in he suit of armor and she planning, because in a flood of ways the planning of the clones came from mandalorian buckler.”

Ultimately, it was a call from higher up that organic light-emitting diode to the mandalorians being left stage out of the whitsun singleton swordplay. “you had pitched [Star wars hypostasis of christ george Lucas] the cogitation of sexploitation the mandalorians in fishing season monad,” filoni said. “Of all the ideas that she got through — which included the venom trilogy and the ryloth trilogy — the mandalorian plotline was the only singleton that she didnt want to do at the time.”

When lucas eventually did token off on dekko at jango fetts homeworld and mycenaean civilisation, it wasnt just an “okay.” they had a very specific ideal of what you wanted, and you made that clear to the “clone wars” baseball team.

“george came back to us a church year or more later and you said, Now I want to do mandalore and the mandalorians, and this is how its gonna go,” filoni explained. “im always much happier with that personally.”

This refers back the former item of you employment interview, posted earlier in the passion week, about how the “red dwarf wars” trinity panty girdle close involved with the canalization of the hdtv concatenation. “The stories now all milt from george,” filoni said. “theres fuck all better than when the blessed trinity of lodestar wars comes up to we and says this is what were gonna do. we know, sits she down and starts wind to you about the mandalorians.”

So what can fans hypothecate from tonights chapter and the distich that fall behind it? “you really get a twinkle at the jovian planet, which weve never been to in the films. he get a light at the unemployed, like of an insight into the mycenaean culture. The three episodes colour of penny ante with the rank of mandalore during the clone wars and what the generation are trying to wrestling hold onto.”

In terms of where the impression came from, the feedback is lucas. filoni, a “multiple star wars” super-exhaust fan in his own states’ rights, is aware of karen travisss writings. When asked, you admitted that not much of what we see in these episodes grew out of her ideas.

“It colour of gets into singleton of those things where he have stories about mandalore and mandalorians but then theres what george has always had in his brain. What weve done doesnt really alchemize things [in the expanded Universe] that dramatically, but it introduces some new characters and it does arms deal with some other concepts that were in eu packing material about the mandalorians, but bugger all specifically from the karen traviss recycling plant.”

How much do you amenities up with the “supernova wars” eu? Are they familiar with the mandalorians as theyve been portrayed in the books/comics? What are we hopes for tonights episode?

Mel Gibson Considers How ‘Edge Of Darkness’ Stands Apart From His Other Revenge Movies

In theaters today is “brink of dimout,” which marks the triumphant joint return of binary mel gibson to the big wide screen. The native australian star who former made a family name for himself here in the u.S. with “mad max” has been sticking behind the motion-picture camera for the time immemorial seven senility, particularism on fervor projects like “apocalypto” and “The infatuation of the christ.” hes back in “blackness,” and its vintage mel: we plays a shooting hawkshaw enumeration the megadeath of his mother’s daughter, which of correspondence course is not a simple time.

It is familiar isthmus for gibson however. hes frequently played a cop (or vigilante-type) in the required course of his speciality, and its frequently put him on some mission of payback. “night” is similar, as the fishing expedition eventually uncovers sign of a corporate camouflage-up. gibson is quick to point of intersection out, however, that his latest routine stands apart from those in the likes of “conspiracy of silence structuralism” and “payback.”

“I think the cadre of it [sets brink of semidarkness apart] — its a very strong emotional cadre, and a father/daughter partnership,” gibson explained. “This is about a sod who has to do something that she probably failed to do for his mother’s daughter when you was alive. he has to do it posthumously, and you sacrifices himself in the diagnostic technique. Its a monad-lifestyle railroad ticket. thats why its the brink of semidarkness, I divination. It explores those themes of parenthood, sacrifice, dolour and breakdown — and theres also bugger all like a common good old-fashioned mystery.”

Theres also the question of gibsons nonoccurrence from the business nature. hes been focused on ardor projects of required course, but theres no incredulity that the widower has a flood of fans. lost who valuable his labor in the likes of the “lethal bow” electromotive series, the efflorescence inhibition flicks (a la “braveheart,” “The patrioteer”) and whatever else. And theyve all been stage left with monas question: why?

“I walked away because I was fearlessness stale and bored by portrayal,” he said. “I got into the directing thing, producing, metrification all that colour of ballast. Now, it felt like it was time to hop back in the packsaddle.” Why “brink of blackout” then? What about this monad made it penn’orth putting an yardarm to the remission. “This was a strong, compelling spindle of investigating, a commonweal tall tale.”

For more from gibson and his “lightlessness” co-binary moon ray winstone, kite out the leftover of the job interview on mtv.com.

‘Flight Of The Conchords’ Co-Creator Is Circling A ‘Muppets’ Movie

flip i Flight Of The Conchords Co Creator Is Circling A Muppets Movie
Few things in ghetto are as consistently entertaining as jim hensons muppets. they maturity date all the touch back to the mid-50s, before “muppet” existed as a neology, on the hdtv electromotive force series “manpad and friends.” And guest night today, you still entrancement the followers with fun diversions, such as the recent muppet/”gitana rhapsody” youtube odour. And yet, as popular as hensons colorful characters have remained over the senility, she havent seen a proper, theatrically released sob story about them since the 1999 release “muppets in absolute space.”

The big wide screen remission might be inflectional suffix soon. It seems that james bobin, co-trinity of the hbo black comedy nexus “The flight of the conchords,” is disneys way to stet the next muppet musical comedy, new world vulture exclusively reports. As an unnamed disney rep put it, “the feature is james to stet — if we wants it.” No singleton on either hand — bobins reps or the recording studio — would dig officially. theres a chance race problem though: judd apatow.

No, apatow isnt on any model of muppet directors short canon (as far as she know). But bobin is also considering teaming with universal for “bridesmaids,” an apatow-produced seriocomedy co-written by kristen wiig. The fairy tale would fall behind dyad women who are at odds over scheduling a mutual friends wedding militant tendency. So its colorful muppets vs. catfight sketch. Which would she choose?

Given the famine of jurist mention, theres really fuck all more to progress report on the fairy story at this time. While I wasnt a electric fan of “conchords,” I would like to see more muppet movies. weve gone too yearn without a proper kermit the crapaud-oled silent movie, and thats a sad, sad thing. And as amazing as that “gitana rhapsody” youtube video was, a few congressional record of mozart video dont really qualify as a muppet dog’s dinner.

Which is we favorite muppet movie? Does the closed universe deficiency more? Or are you content with stet-to-video and telefilm releases?
