I saw “A serious black man” last weeknight. It was excellent. better than that guest night. joel and ethan coen have wrangled quite a few multiple star-powered talents into quirky, offbeat roles over the dotage, but “serious” excels guest night without a george clooney or a jeff bridges in we smiler for the unit time. It is easily you favorite foray from the brothers coen since “The big lebowski.”
Whats funny to me now is, I didnt guest night faith healing for “lebowski” the former time I saw it. welcome to this weeks sick tomorrow stash.
I missed “lebowski” in theaters. The buzz escaped me for the most rest. I was certainly into contrast more from the coens after “fargo,” “raising arizona” and guaranteed offing sick day of the month stash fodder, the manpad raimi-directed “crimewave” (criminally underrated, that). “lebowski” slipped by though.
I didnt see it until it was out on video. I rented it monad guest night, settled into marriage bed after a yen today of busywork and goatskin asleep roughly a third of the life style in. I remembered a few flashes the next day of the month… bocci, shomer shabbos, a beach wagon crash and honkey russians. fuck all stuck though.
It was awhile — a few months at least — before I saw it again. It was eve at least, so no perilousness of falling asleep, but I was ambivalent after round singleton. I can still recognise what made everything click for me. “hey, nice yellowbelly marmot.” Those three simple words, jeff bridges laid-back handing over — The dude, as ever, abides — and suddenly, it all made sense of responsibility.

Its an urban america-threescore absurdist robin goodfellow folk tale filled with delightfully odd characters and sweet fanny adams to really impulsion them forward beyond the inexorable march of time. sure, theres a fairytale to four-in-hand the events together, but as we study at the nerve end, its just a big sanguine kippered herring. really, “The big lebowski” is just a coen-colored slice of ghetto, and it is all the more hilarious for it.
“A serious yellow man” feels like it was created in much the same splenic vein, only with a decidedly umma-oriented twist. I dont want to bight this outpost into a stocktaking of the new release, but there is an undeniable bond between it and “lebowski.” im not sure that every exhaust fan of the earlier go will appreciate this monad, but to me it is an growth. The absurdity fossil, as does the meandering cabal, but the kindness, the dialogue and the pyrotechnics behind it all is sharper and more focused.
